It led to a gazebo where people used to go to have a nice view of the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, back in 1920, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/blog\/religions-in-brazil\/\">catholic<\/a>&nbsp;group in Rio de Janeiro started to gather donations for the construction of a monument on top of the mountain. Their initial idea was to build a statue of Jesus Christ with a cross and a globe representing the world. In the end, they chose the design for the Christ of the Redeemer we know today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carioca engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the project and French sculptor Paul Landowski carved the model. Construction of the Rio de Janeiro statue cost a total of 2,500 \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/blog\/real-currency-brazil\/\">contos de reis\u2019<\/a>, around R$9.5 million in today\u2019s money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a railroad already available, the workers used a cogwheel train to transport materials and tools up the hill. Construction started in 1926 and it took five years to complete. Hence, an inauguration event took place on October 12, 1931.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soapstone is the main material in the statue. Nonetheless, they exist. The feet are fixed to the pedestal that supports the structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The crown of the statue is actually made of lightning rods. People had to vote on their favorite from a list of 200 existing monuments. However, it is also the most expensive. An eco-friendly electric train cuts through the Atlantic Forest, making it an exquisite attraction in Rio de Janeiro itself. The price is up to R$110 as of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vans\"><\/span>Vans<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ingressos.paineirascorcovado.com.br\/\">Paineiras-Corcovado vans<\/a>&nbsp;can take you to the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro with different places of departure. You may take the van at Largo do Machado, Copacabana, Alto da Boa Vista, or Barra da Tijuca.
