{"id":85180,"date":"2019-02-20T14:33:30","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T17:33:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/blog\/?p=75790"},"modified":"2026-01-27T19:21:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T19:21:27","slug":"cantagalo-and-pavao-pavaozinho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/blog\/cantagalo-and-pavao-pavaozinho\/","title":{"rendered":"Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/blog\/the-favelas-of-rio-de-janeiro\/\">favelas<\/a> being discussed in this article are Cantagalo, which literally means \u201csinging&nbsp;rooster\u201d, and Pav\u00e3o -or, \u201cPav\u00e3ozinho\u201d, which means \u201cpeacock\u201d, or \u201clittle peacock.\u201d Two&nbsp;endearingly named communities that were once so infamous for drug war violence that they&nbsp;were selected as a featured location of the popular first-person shooter video game&nbsp;franchise \u201cCall of Duty\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even so, Cantagalo and <a href=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/blog\/getting-to-know-pavao-pavaozinho\/\">Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho<\/a>, which together home near to 5000 Brazilians,&nbsp;are independent from each other, although they remain geographically united by proximity. It&nbsp;is therefore that they share many features, such as their privileged location so close to the&nbsp;sea, as well as enjoying one of the best views in Rio de Janeiro. Nevertheless, these&nbsp;communities are still haunted by poverty and violence; a truth as ironic as it is eye-opening,&nbsp;taking into account their location in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, bordering with some of&nbsp;Rio\u2019s most lucrative districts; Leblon, Ipanema, and Copacabana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_0002.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DSC_0002-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"cantagalo favela rio de janeiro\" class=\"wp-image-75795\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, despite both communities being pacified, I quickly learned that pacification&nbsp;does not necessarily equate to peace. For example, on the 23rd of April 2014, weeks before&nbsp;the World Cup, a violent drug war wrought havoc in the communities of Cantagalo and&nbsp;Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho. On this sad day, innocent people lost their lives. Innocent people like&nbsp;Douglas Rafael da Silva Pereira, or \u201cDG\u201d as he was known, was mistaken for a drug-trafficker and killed. DG was well known, respected, as was he a dancer on the popular&nbsp;show \u201cEsquenta!\u201d, making him an inspiration to the Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3zinho people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, it is important to remember that there is so much more to favelas like&nbsp;Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3zinho than violence, police brutality and drug wars, and that&nbsp;efforts are being made to improve the lives of future generations by offering more&nbsp;opportunities to those who grow up in these hostile environments.&nbsp;For instance, NGOs and cultural projects such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meninosdeluz.org.br\/\">Solar Meninos de Luz<\/a> (whose focus is&nbsp;education and universal humanitarian values) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harmonicanto.org.br\/\">Harmonicanto<\/a> (who provide art&nbsp;workshops, music lessons, a vegetable garden, and more), both have centers in the&nbsp;Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3ozinho area, and afford youngsters who live in the favelas with&nbsp;the tools to forge a brighter future for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <a href=\"https:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/about-caminhos\/mais-caminhos-social-program\/\">Mais Caminhos<\/a> we also provide an educational program that focuses on the academic&nbsp;and emotional development of the youth living in the Cantagalo and Pav\u00e3o-Pav\u00e3zinho&nbsp;communities. Our program includes English classes, social-emotional learning, as well as a&nbsp;ton of fun activities for everyone to enjoy such as sports and games. We also offer focused&nbsp;workshops, such as cinema, photography and technology so that youths may expand their&nbsp;skills, giving them invaluable future prospects and thereby broadening their horizons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Watch out world.
