Whether it be on gangs, policing, poverty, mass protest movements, deforestation, water pollution, plastic surgery or even sport \u2013 you name it, it\u2019s pretty much been covered.&nbsp; Whatever it may be, you\u2019ve probably heard about it and you\u2019ve maybe seen it too.&nbsp; There, Muniz watched the gruelling work of the&nbsp;<em>catadores<\/em>&nbsp;\u2013 recycling pickers \u2013 and selected a group of them to collaborate with him for his latest vision: to transform the grubby materials they worked with every day into contemporary art, changing the recycling pickers\u2019 lives in the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fruits of their labour culminated in their \u2018Portraits of Waste\u2019 (<em>\u2018Retratos de Lixo\u2019<\/em>) being displayed in prestigious London auction house, Phillips.&nbsp; Successful sales of the artwork enabled the founder and leader of the workers\u2019 association, Sebasti\u00e3o Carlos Dos Santos, himself one of the portrait subjects, to fulfil his dream of improving life for his community through the&nbsp;co-operative&nbsp;he had established.<em><strong>***<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ll let you find out the rest for yourselves.&nbsp; For me, the sad undertones of&nbsp;<em>Waste Land<\/em>&nbsp;gave way to a beautifully uplifting story, and the film was a great surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Retratos-de-Lixo-1-240x300.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/caminhoslanguages.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Retratos-de-Lixo-1-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"Retratos-de-Lixo-1-240x300\" class=\"wp-image-325\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Retrato de Lixo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I shouldn\u2019t be that surprised that&nbsp;<em>Waste Land<\/em>&nbsp;is such a good film. &nbsp;What I should be surprised about, however, is that it took me so long to hear about it.
