I know how it works!
First off all you Need a cpf (there are enough explications how it easily works).
Than you need a credit card. No matter of which country (my card I from a German bank).
Than you have to book the ANUAL plan (60€)!

We tried like hundred times to book the monthly pass (8€), but it didn’t work. Even with a lot of contact with the support team.

We stay here 6 months so it’s worth it for us.

You can!
1. First you need to register for CFP number as a foreigner.
The kink is:
http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Aplicacoes/ATCTA/CpfEstrangeiro/fcpfIng.asp
2. Print, sign and scan the generated form.
3. Scan your passport.
4. Take selfie with your passport.
5. Send all 3 to:
cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br
In few days you`ll have CFP number for bike rentals, drone registration, etc…

In reply to Jaka. We have contacted the app and were waiting for them to get back to us about the self-service stations where you can rent a bike without registering in the app. Now we were able to update the article. It was just a matter of time.

After all the comments here telling you the rental is not possible unless you are a Brazilian, Argentinian or Chilean, you still didn’t update the article? That’s a shame, it makes you look outdated and non-reliable.

Most disappointing the app cannot be used by visitors to Rio from countries outside South America
I was so looking forward to cycling in Rio but guess it’s not possible using the bike Rio system

My partner is Brazilian and paid via the app but as Jimmy says above, only 3 nationalities are possible. However, the helpline told me that certain bike stations have a screen which allows other nationalities to input personal / credit card data without the need for a national identity number. The app says there’s one near to where I am now so I’m going to try this tomorrow.

The app requires you to be Brazilian, Argentinian, or Chilean when signing up for an account. If you are none of those, you can not rent a bike through the app.
